Taylor Swift Makes Surprise Cameo in Dakota Johnson's 'SNL' Monologue
The pop star turned up unannounced during Johnson's third stint hosting "Saturday Night Live," extending a collaboration that began last month with Swift's self-directed "Patient Zero" video.

Taylor Swift made an unannounced appearance on "Saturday Night Live" early Sunday, stepping into the opening monologue of host Dakota Johnson during the second episode of the sketch show's 52nd season. Swift's cameo was confirmed by multiple outlets that covered the Oct. 3 broadcast, including Variety and Deadline, and by a clip the show posted to its own account on X showing Johnson's monologue.
Johnson, hosting for the third time, had spent the opening minutes of her monologue joking about her dating history and her new film, "Verity," before turning to the subject of friendship. "I have really good friends," she told the Studio 8H audience. "They don't judge me, they're really supportive. Ladies and gentlemen, my literal therapist." Swift then walked out from offstage to object to the description.
"I'm not your therapist, actually," Swift told Johnson. "You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some… You flop on my couch and overshare and every so often I say, 'Damn, that's crazy.'"
The two performers traded a few more lines in the same register — Johnson supplying "Sleepover, yay!" to Swift's description of their routine, and Swift countering that she then gives Johnson "Pedialyte" before her security "drives you home" — before the bit returned to Johnson's dating life, including references to relationships with Coldplay's Chris Martin and the singer Role Model. Later in the episode, during the show's closing "goodnights" segment, Swift brought out a birthday cake for Johnson, who turned 37 on Sunday.
Variety's account of the segment noted that one fan posting on X described the moment Swift stepped into frame as a "Taylor Swift jump scare," a phrase that was picked up widely in social-media reaction to the clip overnight. The appearance quickly became the most-discussed moment of the episode, overshadowing the night's political cold open and other sketches.
A Collaboration Built on a Music Video
The "SNL" appearance extended a pairing that began last month, when Swift premiered the music video for her song "Patient Zero" at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27. Swift directed the video herself, with Johnson and Colin Farrell starring as a couple whose marriage conceals a darker history connecting back to Swift's own character in the narrative; the video's cinematography was credited to Emmanuel Lubezki. The song is one of four new tracks on "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore," the expanded edition of Swift's 2025 album, which was released Sept. 25. Swift had also used her Instagram Stories on Saturday to promote an eight-minute "expanded video" version of "Patient Zero," available exclusively on Apple Music, according to Variety's earlier coverage of the video's debut.
Johnson, for her part, was using the "SNL" slot to promote "Verity," the Amazon MGM Studios adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel in which she stars opposite Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. In her monologue, she described the film as a "psychosexual erotic thriller" and joked that her own dating life qualified her for the role.
An Uneven History at 30 Rock
Swift's appearance was notable in part because of how rarely she turns up on the show. According to Variety, she has hosted "SNL" only once, in 2009, and has served as musical guest four times — in 2009, 2017, 2019 and 2021. She also made a brief cameo during a monologue in 2014 and appeared in a "The Californians" sketch in 2015. Her last time on screen at Studio 8H came in October 2023, when she appeared to introduce musical guest Ice Spice, with whom she had collaborated on a remix.
Johnson's history with the show, by contrast, has become a running bit of its own. Her prior two hosting stints — one around the time of the show's 40th-anniversary special and another in January 2024 — each produced a viral monologue moment, including a surprise appearance by Justin Timberlake in 2024. Sunday's episode continued that pattern, with online commentary treating Swift's entrance as the latest installment in an informal tradition.
A Season Already Leaning on Star Power
"Saturday Night Live," now in its 52nd season on NBC, opened the year on Sept. 26 with basketball player Jalen Brunson hosting and the group Katseye as musical guest. Johnson's episode, with the band Turnstile serving as musical guest, was the season's second. The show's previously announced lineup includes comedian Shane Gillis hosting on Oct. 10 alongside musical guest Rosalía, and a Halloween episode on Oct. 31 built around horror actress Inde Navarrette and musical guest Gracie Abrams.
None of those bookings involve Swift in any official capacity, and there had been no advance announcement that she would appear Sunday. Deadline's report noted that speculation about a possible Swift cameo had circulated among fans after she recently appeared in an "SVU"-themed sketch filmed for the Emmy Awards broadcast, in which a prop bearing the show's logo was visible in the background — what Variety's report called "not her subtlest clue ever."
What Comes Next
For "Saturday Night Live," the appearance adds to a season that has already drawn outsized attention for its guest bookings, with new episodes continuing through the fall before the show breaks for its usual holiday hiatus. For Swift, the cameo is a minor footnote to a busier stretch that includes the rollout of "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore" and the continued promotion of the "Patient Zero" video across streaming platforms. For Johnson, the attention is likely to feed directly into the opening weekend of "Verity," which reached theaters on Oct. 2 and has become one of the more closely watched title releases of the fall season. Neither Swift's nor Johnson's representatives issued separate statements beyond the broadcast itself, and NBC did not immediately indicate whether a fuller clip of the monologue would be made available through its streaming outlets.
